Lean Six Sigma is data driven, customer focused, process improvement methodology that is based on the Scientific Method. It has a step by step approach, utilizes a vast toolkit, and is an integration of two very successful approaches at process improvement. The name “Six Sigma” was coined by Motorola in the 80’s to help differentiate it from previous quality improvement techniques and helps to reinforce the data driven focus. Most projects that utilized the six sigma approach were aimed at reducing process variation.
“Lean” is a term developed in the 90’s to describe the quality improvement techniques developed by the Japanese in the second half of the twentieth century to eliminate waste and reduce hand-offs.
